Growtopia is a free-to-play sandbox multiplayer online (MMO) game that allows players to collect resources, craft items, and build their world while playing alone or with other real players around the world. The game was originally released in 2012 on Android and in 2013 on iOS and PC/Mac. Almost seven years after its original Android release, Growtopia is now out on consoles (Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One). We tried out the PlayStation 4 version to see how Growtopia would hold up on a new platform.
What is Growtopia about?
Like games like Minecraft and Terraria, Growtopia is a sandbox game, meaning players are given a set of tools to play with and then can create anything their imagination can dream up. There’s no storyline to follow, and while there are a number of tutorial quests to complete, the game ultimately focuses on building worlds and interacting with others using the plethora of crafting items available.
How to play Growtopia?
Growtopia offers players a 2D, side-scrolling view of the world (players will move left and right across the screen). A tutorial system tries to teach users the basics of mining blocks, how to use the game’s crafting system, how to protect your world from strangers, and more, but there are problems throughout (more on that below).
On the plus side, Growtopia’s crafting system is very clever as everything from building blocks to furniture items to clothing and accessories grows on trees. Players start with only access to a few types of seeds, which they can plant on the ground to grow trees such as the Dirt Tree (which produces earth blocks) and the Lava Tree (which produces lava blocks).
Once players have collected some seeds, they can create new types of trees (and thus unlock access to new types of items) by linking these seeds (planting two different seeds in the same plot at the same time ).
While some items are decorative, others, such as signs and doors, are functional. Players can write a message on a sign that appears when users walk past it, while doors can be used to swing to another area.
And while the worlds start out basic, dedicated creators can create all sorts of things, including parkour obstacle courses, mini-games (competitions), and more.
In addition to creating their own world, players can visit any other world at any time simply by typing a name in the game’s global menu. If you happen to know the name of your desired destination, you can type in a specific global name, or you can type in any random word to see what happens. Typing in common words, such as “cat” or “dog” will usually always find an existing world. If you type in a world name that isn’t already used by another player, a new world will be created instead that you can control and decide to build on or leave.
There are easy-to-use touch controls for the mobile version, using a standard controller. Growtopia gets easier to play after spending some time and practice.
Trees take time to grow, some take longer than others, so you have to wait for the results. You’re also very limited in the number of grains you can deal with on your own, without interacting with others or purchasing with in-game currency.
But perhaps the most worrying is the universal locking system. Since players can visit any world at any time by typing in the appropriate name, if the world owner doesn’t protect their creations with an in-game lock, rogue players can easily come in and ruin everything. Players are allowed to unlock their first training world for free, but from there, they must spend currency to unlock any future worlds.
Locks come in different sizes that protect different numbers of blocks. A small lock only protects 10 tiles at a cost of 50 gems, while a large lock protects up to 48 tiles and so on. A world lock protects the player’s entire world. Players have created various online video guides to teach the techniques of using these locks.
Players can chat with others online and in real time.
There’s one final thing to note: Unlike the mobile version of Growtopia, players must sign in with a Ubisoft Club account (or create a new one) before they can play Growtopia on console. Ubisoft requires users to be 13 or older before signing up for an account, so if you have little ones under that age, you’ll need to use your own account.
